Thesis Title: The Global Levant: Making a Nation in the Syrian Diaspora, 1913-1939

Ilham Khuri-Makdisi

About

I am interested in how goods, people, and ideas circulate through diaspora networks. My dissertation examines Syrian and Lebanese emigrant networks across North and South America during the period 1913-1939, focusing especially on this diaspora’s political culture as it relates to the emerging nations of Syria and Lebanon.

Using materials from the the diapora's social institutions: club ephemera, political propaganda, cafe broadsides, and the Syrian Arabic press,I argue that Syrians abroad hewed together new ideas about political community, patriotism, and activism in the lands of emigration (al-mahjar). These were remitted back home in service to the nationalist movement, altering politics in ways that had implications for social relations, gender hierarchy, and sectarian solidarities during a crucial period of state formation.

This project has been made possible via affiliations with the Lebanese Emigration Research Center in Zouk Mosbeh, Lebanon, and the Immigration History Research Center in Minneapolis, Minnesota, and with generous grants from the Lucille Zanghi/James Dow Dissertation Research Fellowship, the Immigration History Research Center, and the American University of Beirut.

I work with materials in Arabic, Spanish, Portuguese, and French, and owe much gratitude to my wonderful committee: Ilham Khuri-Makdisi (chair), Laura Frader and Akram Khater (NCSU).
